About
Animethon is a volunteer-run event that uplifts and showcases Asian popular arts and related local communities in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We strive to bring people together to celebrate community, creativity, and culture.
Today, Animethon is presented by the not-for-profit Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts (ASAPA).
History
Animethon began in 1994 as a strategy to promote Anime in Alberta. The student volunteers from the University of Alberta club BAKA (Banzai Anime Klub of Alberta) that ran those first few events attracted a passionate fanbase, and thanks to thousands of dedicated community members who have donated their time year after year, Animethon has grown to reflect the size and diversity of its community. The core of the event is the environment we create for newcomers and fans to collaborate, learn from, and build relationships with each other, creatives, and community ambassadors from around the world. In addition to our 3-day flagship summer event with over 15 000 attendees, the Animethon team has held gaming tournaments, fundraisers, streams, concerts, and more. We have been lucky enough to deliver on requests from our community to fly out their favorite talents from around the world, launch lines of collectible merchandise, and provide a platform for a burgeoning eSports scene.
A Taste of Animethon was first created in 2010. While nowhere near the size of Animethon itself it's been a successful event in its own right with a steadily growing attendance. In 2013 we moved venues to the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre. In 2016 we moved to the Edmonton Convention Centre (formally Shaw Conference Centre) so we could enjoy a larger venue! A Taste of Animethon is on hiatus currently with no planned date of return at this time.
